Halal Food In Japanese Market

In 1980s you could hardly find Halal shops and restaurants in Japan. Nowadays, only in Tokyo there are more than 60 Halal Food Shops and over 200 Halal Food Restaurants and increasing.

Here is some information that comes handy either for Muslims who reside in Japan or those who are planning to visit for sightseeing.

Where can you find Halal food products in Japanese market?

​Today availability of Halal food in supermarkets and even in convenience stores makes the life more comfortable for the Muslim residents, and also gives the travelers a peace of mind especially to those who would like to visit small towns.

Comparing even to a year ago it is much easier to find not only Halal Food Restaurants and Ethnic Halal Food Shops throughout Japan, but also you can buy number of Halal food products in supermarkets like Gyomu and Aeon.

Kobe Bussan runs over 650 stores throughout Japan. Since 2012 many of them where there is a considerable number of Muslims living or visiting as tourists, offer more than 100 items of Halal food products. 

Depending on demand stores may offer limited number of Halal products including; chicken meat, frozen food, seasonings and snacks.

The Gyomu stores’ location map is in Japanese, but it has an English section introducing some of the items they provide with a brief description.

Aeon Supermarkets

In March 2016 Aeon Group launched TOPVALU’s Halal food for Muslims at its 25 Stores in Kanto region. TOPVALU is Aeon’s private brand.

Today about 130 of their stores in Japan are selling the Halal foods which are certified by JAKIM; the National certification body of Halal in Malaysia. The number of Aeon stores offering Halal food products is increasing.

On the Halals Page of this website you can find a list of various businesses in Japan which offer Halal or Muslim friendly products and services. 

On the Basic Info Page there is a considerable amount of information for those who want to visit Japan as well as new comers who would like to study, work and live in Japan.


Few years ago a list of Halal Food Products Available In Japanese Market published by Islamic Association of Nagoya, which makes it easy to find the daily necessities in your nearest supermarket or convenience store.

The list contains many products including Halal baby's powdered milk and baby food, to Halal bread and snacks and fast-food.

Halal In Japan website’s Facebook Page has a collection of Halal food products and beverages which have been provided by organizations like Nippon Asia Halal Association "NAHA", and Japan Halal. 

The collection consists of photo albums which makes it much easier to find the items in any store. It covers many items including halal bread and Naan, dairy products, cakes, cookies and chocolates.

All TOPVALU’s consider halal?
Because I checked there is in the bread and cakes either emulsifier or shortening without mentioning the source.
So is it a vegetarian base?

Also some face book pages emphasized that is not halal!
