In Muslim-majority countries, halal food is widely available in restaurants, street food stands, and many other establishments, as it should be. But here in Japan, it’s different.

Pork, alcoholic beverages, and many other forbidden foods for Muslims are generally consumed here. So, we need to be extra selective and careful to find foods that we can consume. ( Watch A Short YouTube Video )

Below is the list of Haram and doubted ingredients based on the analysis of our Muslim brothers and sisters who had lived in Japan for years. For the main references, you can see them here:

​Haram Ingredients:

No. Japanese = Reading = Meaning

  1. 豚肉 - ポーク= Butaniku = Pooku = Pork
  2. 牛肉 - ビーフ = Gyuuniku = Biifu = Beef
  3. 鶏肉 - チキン = Toriniku = Chikin = Chicken
  4. (No. 1~3) + エキス (No. 1~3) + Ekisu (No. 1~3) + Extract
  5. 豚脂 = Tonshi = Pork = Fat
  6. ラード = Raado = Lard
  7. 牛脂 = Gyuushi = Beef Fat
  8. 動物性油脂 = Doubutsusei-yushi = Animal fat
  9. 加工油脂 = Kakou-yushi = Processed Fat
  10. 混合油脂 = Kongou-yushi = Mixed Fat
  11. コンソメ = Konsome = Consommé (soup)
  12. コンソメパウダー = Konsome Paudaa = Consommé Powder
  13. ゼラチン = Zerachin = Gelatine
  14. アルコール = Arukooru = Alcohol
  15. 酒 = Sake = Sake (alcohol)
  16. 洋酒 = Youshu = Western Liquor
  17. 酒精 = Shusei = Ethyl Alcohol
  18. みりん/ 味醂 = Mirin = Mirin (alcohol)
  19. ラム酒 = Ramu-shu = Rum
  20. ワイン = Wain = Wine
  21. ブランディ = Burandi = Brandy
  22. ウィスキー = Uisukii = Whiskey

Syubhat / Doubted Ingredients:

  1. ショートニング = Shortening: It is a fat that can be Lard (Haram). If it is written that the source is vegetable oil (大豆由来 = Daizu Yurai ), then it’s Halal.
  2. 醤油/しょうゆ = Soy sauce: Many types contain alcohol.
  3. 乳化剤 = Emulsifier: It can be from animal derived. If it is written that the source is vegetable oil (大豆由来 = Daizu Yurai), then it’s Halal.
  4. マーガリン = Margarine: Butter substitutes produced from Pork. Plant-Margarine is Halal.
  5. 油脂 = Fat: Most of the cases, fat comes from animal and is Haram to consume. Vegetable driven fat is Halal.
  6. ファットスプレッド = Fat Spread: Most of the cases, fat comes from animal and is Haram to consume. Vegetable driven fat is Halal.
  7. コラーゲンペプチド = Collagen Peptide: It can be derived from fish or animal (pork, beef, chicken)​.

Are sugar in Japan ok for Muslim to consume.do they contain bone char.

I was researching about sake, and I found out that there is a non alcoholic version of Amazake...
I was not so sure about believing it... if somebody who lives in japan can confirm, it will be a great help
