Shiga Prefecture is in Kansai region adjacent to Kyoto and Nara, hence there are many historic spots such as temples, shrines, castles and ninja houses.
The Prefecture is enclosed by mountain ranges, so visitors can easily enjoy the wonderful natural views. Shiga's climate sharply varies between north and south. Southern Shiga is usually warm, but northern Shiga is typically cold with high snowfall and hosts many skiing grounds. The population is concentrated along the southern shore of Lake Biwa in Otsu, the capital city neighboring Kyoto - and also along the lake's eastern shore cities which are within commuting distance to Kyoto. The lake's western and northern shores are more rural and resort-oriented with white sand beaches. |
