Not far from the Fuji Five Lakes, the Maglev Exhibition Center "Linear Kengaku Center" was opened in 2011 alongside the 42.8 Km Yamanashi test track for the next-generation, magnetic levitating "Maglev" trains.
It is the only place in Japan where visitors can see a Maglev train up-close running at over 500 km/h. Operation dates for each week are usually posted to the official website on the previous Friday evening, but operation times are only announced at the facility itself. |

The exhibition center is a museum where visitors can learn about the science and history of Maglev trains. Visitors to the center are greeted on the first floor by a real MLX01-2 Maglev train.
The record is now 603 km/h, which was achieved on test tracks in 2015. However, commercial trains on the new Maglev Chuo Shinkansen Line will stick to the 500 km/h. The Chuo Shinkansen is a Maglev Line under construction between Shinagawa Station in Tokyo and Nagoya, and planned to be extended to Osaka. |
The line is expected to connect Tokyo and Nagoya in 40 minutes, and eventually Tokyo and Osaka in 67 minutes, running at a maximum speed of 505 km/h. About 90% of the 286 kilometer line to Nagoya will be built underground or through tunnels.
JR Central that operates the facilities and the research is considering operating a demonstration service from a new station in Kofu City by the 2020 Summer Olympics so that tourists can ride on the experimental track through the Yamanashi Mountains. |
The center features a miniature maglev train, a slow moving ride that allows visitors to experience what it’s like to float on air.
It is also possible to ride the trains during their test runs within certain times of the year. For that, you need to make reservation about two to three months in advance. For more information visit JR Central Website. Fuji-Q Highland lies next to Fujikyu Highland Station on the Fujikyu Railway Line between Otsuki and Kawaguchiko Stations. If you’d like to continue the fun, you can reach Fujikyu Highland Station in about 52 minutes. |
