Blue Pond – A beautiful artificial pond that was created as part of an erosion control system, built to prevent damage to Biei in case of an eruption by nearby Mount Tokachidake. Its charm is that, depending on how the light falls, the pond can be a breathtaking turquoise blue color or a stunning emerald green. |
The blue color of the pond, for which it is known, has not been fully explained but is attributed to the presence of aluminum hydroxide dissolved in the water that reflects the shorter wavelength blue light the same way the earth’s atmosphere does.
The Blue Pond is located along Prefectural Road number 966. Buses between Biei Station and Shirogane Onsen stop at Shirogane Aoiike Iriguchi bus stop along the way "takes about 20 minutes". A free parking lot is located next to the road from which the pond can be reached in a 10 minutes’ walk. Stop by Tourist Information Center for guidebooks. |
